2006-06 Boston Visit

The Freedom Trail Boston, MA
I hope I’ll never have to travel this way again. We left Niles, Michigan around 8 in the morning yesterday, but didn’t get to Boston till almost midnight. The drive reminds me of trips back to Taiwan, you reach the destination very tired and cranky.
SO and I are on this trip for Lea Anne’s wedding. It’s in NH, but we stopped at Boston to visit SO’s other roommates, Andy and Marty, who flew in from Portland. I was most unprepared. Maybe it was because of the short duration, but I didn’t feel this will turn out to be a real vacation. Anyway, we made it half way through the Freedom Trail. I didn’t pay attention to most of the buildings, since I have no idea of their historical significance. The funny thing was that we past a lot of places where I’ve been with my parents before. I also remember going to Dad’s professor’s house on Cape Cod. I think I was really young then.
I wonder if it’ll be like this all my life: not appreciate the moment till it’s long gone.

Legal Sea Foods Boston, MA
This was somewhat of a disappointment. I had imagined some tiny brick building, tucked into a street with no signs, or something like that. Instead, the Legal Sea Foods is a chain. Even worse, the one listed in the book was in a mall. (It was a very lovely mall though.)
I was all ready to order my $30 lobster. Instead, when I asked the waiter’s opinion, I got his suggestion of a wrap instead. A wrap! It had two pieces of lobster meat. I really have to come back here again for my authentic Boston seafood experience. SO, Andy, Marty, and I enjoyed a nice lunch though, and the Boston Cream Pie was very good. Plus, SO picked up the bill, so I have no grounds for complaints.
While we were walking out of the mall, I saw another restaurant inside. The name was Palm, with the “l” drawn like a palm tree. Then I remembered everything: I was with Mom and Dad in this exact mall. It was late and most of the shops were closed, the only places that were open were the restaurants. We were walking out of the mall when I saw these people finishing up their meals in Palm. And I thought to myself, “I want to be like them someday. All dressed up, hanging out with friends, and having a good time late in the evening.”
