2005-09 Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago, IL

9.1.2005

Now it’s time to entertain Dad. We walked all over Chicago for the mere fact that $20 is too high a price to pay for parking regardless of the parking lot location. We settled with the meter instead, and ran back every two hours to feed it another $2. We walked continuously for 5 hours.
Dinner was good. Yes, it was art, but the price was too high for even the highest of culinary experience. Dinner was over $400, and if I had ordered wine, it would be $500; the price of two pairs of Tiffany earrings, 3 round way tickets to NY, 1/4 of my EC collection worth, and a month of food plus gas for myself. Anyway, I’m complaining too much because Dad paid.
I find myself unaccustomed to the service and the atmosphere. The whole time I was uneasy. We weren’t the type who spend hundreds of dollars on dinner every night, no one in that restaurant look like a regular either. It was only until coffee did I feel that being dotted by waiters was not only necessary but demanded. To me, tea & coffee requires at least two servers in fancy restaurants.
Anyway, food was, as advertised, fancy with an Asian flare. We got to tour the kitchen, where one table was stationed and people can eat while watching the many chiefs working, but we didn’t get to meet Charlie. Suggest to reserve the kitchen table next time.
