2002-10 Michigan-Pennsylvania Road Trip

10.11.2002-10.13.2002

During Fall Break, Dave and I drove down to Philadelphia to visit my friend Ina who’s studying in La Salle University for the semester. We passed Ohio and Delaware on the way and stayed in New Castle, DE for two nights.

Places visited:
Toledo Zoo, Betsy Ross House, Philadelphia Zoo, Hershey’s Chocolate World, Zooamerica

2002-10 Toledo Zoo TOLEDO ZOO
Direction: Take US 25 (Maumee) to zoo parking lot
Phone: (419) 385-5721

We visited the Toledo Zoo on our way to Philly. The drive wasn’t too far and we had enough time (or so we thought) so we spent a couple of hours at the zoo. This was when I realized how useful my zoo membership pass is. We only spent $3 on parking there. The zoo itself is a medium size zoo with lots of friendly staff. Although the place is not huge, it was confusing to figure out where we were and where to go next. Their Aviary is very impressive.
BETSY ROSS HOUSE
Address: 239 Arch Street; Philly, PA
The second day we started off from New Castle and drove to meet up with Ina in Philly. We passed by the Liberty Bell but there was a long line (Ina said it usually takes about 3 hours to see the Bell) so we went to Betsy Ross House instead.
Although there isn’t suppose to have an entrance fee, there is a mandatory donation of minimum $2.50 to get in. The gift shop, however, did not require the donation so that’s where went went (it was as big as the House anyway…)
PHILADELPHIA ZOO
Address: 3400 West Girard Avenue
Direction: Exit 342 on I-76

After visiting Betsy Ross House, Ina, Dave, and I went to Philadelphia Zoo.
Philly Zoo was the best zoo in this trip. It was impressive enough being the first zoo in America, it was also large and well maintained. Most of the animals were kept in cages, however, instead of a larger area designed similar to their natural habitat. There was also a swan peddle boat rental but we go there.

HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE WORLD
Direction: Get to Hershey, PA and follow the signs
Web: www.hersheyschocolateworld.com
2002-10 Hershey Ticket I always wanted to go to Hershey Park since there’re many machines there. So I was really thrilled about being able to pass right by Hershey, PA until we got to the park and it was closed. We could see all the rides from the parking lot; so close, yet so far away…
Instead we went to Hershey’s Chocolate World (which was free admission because it’s just a huge advertisement). It was a lot of fun, but the chocolate there aren’t any cheaper.
ZOOAMERICA - NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE PARK
Address: Entrance on Rt. 743
Web: www.zooamerica.com
Right next to Hershey’s giant park, there is a tiny zoo called Zooamerica. We didn’t plan on going to Hershey in the beginning so I didn’t check the location report for the city. It’s a good thing that the zoo is right next to the park or else I would of missed it.
The zoo, as I mentioned before, is small. There weren’t many people since it was raining and it was right next to Hershey’s. It took about an hour to walk around the entire park.
